Sabina – the worldwide patent holder and trademark holder of this ingredient, cultivates the pepper in damp, nutrient-rich soil in southern India. The fruit is harvested just prior to ripening, sun dried, after which the piperine is extracted.
The most important function of piperine is that it significantly enhances the bioavailability of various supplemental nutrients through increased absorption.
Unfortunately, increasing your intake of black pepper does not produce the same result – as the body does not have the same bioavailability of piperine if the black pepper is taken in its natural form.
As mentioned before BioPerine® - containing the piperine, works at optimizing the absorption of other nutrients in the body. The piperine also works at cellular level to boost the metabolic processes that generate energy at cellular level in the body – normally referred to as thermogenesis.
Although thermogenesis is normally only associated with weight loss, it plays an integral role in utilizing the daily food and nutrients we consume. This enhancement may be explained as the spark that helps to “power-up” the mechanisms of the metabolic processes and provides a more efficient mode of nutrient transportation into the blood.
The patents held on BioPerine are 5,5536,506, 5,744,161, 5,972,382 and 6,054,585 – and they relate to the increase of bioavailability of nutritional compounds, bioavailability enhancer and making high purity piperine for nutritional use.
Various studies have proven the effectiveness of BioPerine and some showed that absorption levels were increased up to 60%. In one study (Duessel S, et al, 2008) it was shown that it also has value in helping to maintain a healthy colon and to help protect against colon cancer, while another study (Wattanathorn J et al, 2008) showed that it possessed anti-depression like activity and cognitive enhancing properties, while yet another study (Kumar A et al, 2008) showed it may contain antibacterial properties as well as anti-allergy properties.
It is interesting to note that Ayurvedic medicine – the ancient Indian medical system – has been preoccupied for more than 6,000 years with the proper functioning of the digestive tract – and especially the digestion and absorption of nutrients. Nearly 60% of all traditional Ayurveda medicine contains some special blend of ingredients, which include black pepper in the blend.
